Forward Motion Hare Scrambles – Chanute

Recently one of my photos made it out to OffRoadChampions.com and it’s good to see the FMHSC series getting a little bit of press. Below is Dennis Jonon hauling it through the trees for the AA class win. It was a dusty day for everyone and I even managed to make it there and back without losing a $100 tire on the Subaru like I did at the Merwin race.

Site Changes

Some folks that have been around awhile might have noticed that the look and feel of the site have changed. This is only part of a switch that I plan to make on the back end of the site. Toward the end of the year as things slow down, I plan to migrate my photo hosting to another solution that’ll give me more control of photo sales.

Things will look different, but my prints will still come from Centric Photo in Tucson. Yep, my photos are printed and dropped in the mail by the good folks at my old local lab. I met the lab owner through some volunteer work that my wife and I were doing and found out that he supported all kinds of local events.

I could use some other web-based photo printing solutions and increase profits by a few percent. Sure, I could. Here’s the rub: How many banners, which mean monetary support, from these other places do you see at local events? I have yet to go to an event and see a (insert cheap web print company name) banner or any other signs of support for local events that support local charities.

Forward Motion Hare Scrambles – Merwin

The heat let up just a bit this past weekend and a light rain coated the dust for the PeeWee racers. RJ and the folks at Midwest Extreme Park even had the Red Bull arch up for the little guys. Here’s a shot of Ethan Inman flying low under the arch.

The arch was catching too much wind to be kept out for the big bikes, so they just got some dust and some photos near a small creek crossing. Below is Cooper Swanson shooting off of a 6′ creek bank and actually jumping the entire creek bed. He made a couple of great passes doing this…although it was a bit unsettling to have a bike come by this close and this fast.

Kansas Rocks and Recreation Park

I got to go out with some folks from various 4WD clubs this past Saturday and shoot some at Kansas Rocks and Recreation Park or KRRP. It was a bit steamy, but the there was a slight breeze…you know..enough to help the chiggers cool off while they were gnawing on my ankles.

The photos are on sale here as part of Operation Night Light. Net proceeds go to help with Operation LightSabre which outfits Hummers in Afghanistan and Iraq with good lights.

The guys that took me into “Carnage Canyon” were a hoot and I really enjoyed getting to see just what the old Toyota FJs are capable of with stock engines and larger tires.

Nothing like a little dashboard mojo.

Note to guys in 4WD clubs: If you want lots photos of your rig, take the photographer along in your vehicle.

Forward Motion Hare Scrambles – Walters Ranch

This past weekend was the Walters Ranch race. It was good to see a large turnout and a couple of guys from Letko Cycles even came out to ride since it was a day off.

The Walters Ranch looks like a great place to ride and the owner is really nice. They have a basic website up and running now and it’ll supply all of the information about what’s happening there.

Just Married

A good friend of mine was married this past weekend and asked me to ‘come up to the wedding and take a few pictures’. How could I refuse? It’s his 2nd go’round and her first, but I think that they were both nervous and anxious to get on with it.

I usually don’t shoot weddings, so I refer all local inquiries to Stu Nowlin.

Sister Act Face Painting

This past weekend, my daughter’s birthday party was held. It was great fun for the little ones, in part due to MJ from Sister Act Face Painting. Of course my lovely wife worked out a scavenger hunt that was a big hit too. Some of the kids were busy playing with toys, some were vacuuming up doritos, and some were either in the chair getting painted or watching. MJ’s paint work was a big hit, not only with the kids, but with the parents. I think all of us were shocked at just how nice her work was.

l would have enjoyed having the top of my head painted, but I had a wedding to shoot right after the party…….

FMHSC – Big Springs 2010

This past weekend was the Forward Motion Hare Scrambles Championship Race at Big Springs. It was a beautiful day and a good course run by Perry Keegan and Dan Johnson. They, and all of the volunteers, did a wonderful job on a new race site and I’m looking forward to riding there someday myself.

Above is rider John Charlson on the back wheel and on the gas. He had the fastest first lap in his class and went on to finish 11th out of 17 in the full-on-sandbagger, um, I mean, C Vet Advanced class. That class seems to be loaded with ringers. It seems that former world class pro level rider and consummate trash talker Scott Henion (too fast for my camera) bested the entire gaggle on this day though and somehow came out first in this group.

Arkansas Hare Scrambles – Old Crow

This past weekend my brother and I headed down to the AHSCS Old Crow race. It was a good trip because we took our daughters and they got to visit with the grandparents while we went out and played in the dirt.

I got to meet a nice kid from Memphis at the race and his name is Spencer Cook. He’s fast and he flogged that KTM like it owed him money – this kid was on the gas. His bike was either wide open or he was on the brakes…and he rode like that all day. I spoke to his dad at the race and he’s been having trouble with flats; as it turns out, this race day was no exception. He got a flat on the last lap and surrendered first place to Zach Ingram before the race ended.

Nate and Bud over at BulletProof Designs sponsored the race and kicked out $150 for the holeshot and $150 for most laps led. Spencer went home with $300.

Perry Dam Race #2

A good friend of mine is in a bicycle race on Sunday and I’ll be out near the Perry Lake Dam shooting photos of him and other competitors. More information about the race can be found at lanternerougekansas.com. I spoke with the organizer, Roger Harrison, about shooting and he’ll be out there with a camera too, so there should be good coverage.
